Rolex’s 40th birthday celebration

The Datejust is one of Rolex’s oldest yet most admirable collections, launched in 1945 to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary. The watch brought together revolutionary novelties like a waterproof Oyster case, an automatic changing date display at 3 o’clock, and the signature Rolex jubilee bracelet, exclusive to the Datejust. It immediately became the watch of the hour!

The Datejust is the epitome of Rolex innovation, characterised by an intriguing design combined with functionality. Today, the date display seems to be a regular attribute of Rolex watches, but when it was released, it was a head-turning innovation. The feature ensured greater functionality and was something to look out for. The date display at 3 o’clock is zoomed by a Cyclops magnifier (which magnifies the date 2.5 times), ensuring enhanced legibility.

First Datejust model

Rolex made the first-ever Datejust Ref. 4467 in solid yellow gold. However, the later versions were in rose gold, steel, and bi-metal. It had a domed back, a small bubble back winder, a water-proof Oyster case and the jubilee bracelet. Over the years, Datejust has welcomed various changes and innovations.
