Rolex created ripples in the watch industry in 1956 with the release of the legendary Day-Date. It was a watch much ahead of its curve and gathered a thrilling response from the industry critics. The watch symbolised Rolex’s pinnacle of watchmaking prowess with a specially crafted President bracelet and displaying the day and date on the dial. You could see the day of the week written in full at 12 o’clock, and read it in 26 languages. This unique design quickly cemented its position as the best!
Since its creation, the Day-Date had a hallmark identity, for it was the only watch with a semi-circular window at 12 o’clock displaying the day of the week spelt in full. The watch flawlessly represented the brand’s balance between technical excellence and elegance. Both the day and date changed simultaneously at midnight.
This fine balance in the mechanism was way accurate by the standards of the mid-60s, but Rolex being the quintessential perfectionist, excelled at it.
The Day-Date watches exude success and power, naturally making them the watch of choice for many notable presidents like President Johnson, Kenedy, EisenHower and others. This is why it is famous as the ‘Presidents’ watch. Rolex makes the Day-Date models only in gold or platinum, and another significant attribute is the semicircular, three-piece link ‘President’ bracelet created especially for it. This was the origin of the moniker ‘President’.
However, not all Day-Date watches come fitted with a president bracelet. For example, Ref. 118205 has a flat-link Oyster bracelet. Furthermore, some Day-Date models come with leather straps.
Rolex dropped the first Day-Date watch in 1956 with references 6511 (fluted bezel) and 6510 (domed bezel). The watches had a 36mm Oyster case, the iconic President Bracelet, self-winding perpetual movement, and the day displayed in full at the 12 o’clock position. The references were only available in 18ct gold (yellow, white & rose) and platinum.
Rolex created the references for a short period of one year and was already in the market with the successor Ref. 6611 in 1957. Today, you can avail yourself of the Day-Date models in a broader selection of metal, dial, bracelet, bezel, and movement options.

1956: Introduction of Rolex’s flagship Day-Date watches featuring the day of the week above the date aperture at 12 o’clock.
1959: Rolex starts experimenting with different metals, dials, bezels and bracelet options for the Day-Date.
1966: President Lyndon Johnson wore the Day-Date, which presented it the moniker “Presidents’ watch”.
1969: Inclusion of the crown clasp into the president bracelet.
1972: Introduction of the hacking seconds feature to the Rolex Day-Date for users to stop the second hand when setting the time, resulting in enhanced accuracy.
1977: Rolex reacts to the Quartz crisis with their Oysterquartz movement seen under the Day-Date & Datejust collections.
1978: Rolex releases the 180xx series and adds the Single Quick-Set date function, allowing the wearer to set the date of the month independently. Additionally, Rolex replaced the acrylic crystal with the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
1984: For the first time, Rolex refers to the Day-Date as the ‘President’ after an ad campaign with the Rolex President Day-Date chronometer.
1988: Introduction of the Double Quick-Set feature allowing the wearer to set both the date & day separately.
2000: Rolex launched the reference 118xxx with improvements in the bracelet and clasp.
2008: Rolex released a 41mm version with the Day-Date II, which is bulkier than the 36mm.
2015: Launch of the Day-Date 40 with a 40mm case, Roman numeral hour markers and updated Calibre 3255.
2019: Rolex updates the 36mm Day-Date with the Calibre 3255, which boasts a power reserve of 70 hours.
